 Global Warming And Ozone Depletion

TAKE NOTE!

Common Test Topics:
Chapter 1, 3, 11 & Ozone Depletion & Global Warming.

Covered Today.........

What is Ozone Depletion?

= breaking down of Ozone layer in the stratosphere. (30-70km above Earth)

Causes of Ozone Depletion:

The use of Ozone unfriendly products such as aerosol sprays release CFCs, destroy the Ozone layer.
Methyl Bromide from some pesticides also harm the Ozone Layer.

Impacts of Ozone Depletion:

  • Harmful Impacts/Effects of UV Rays:

People: Prolonged exposure will lead to increased risk of skin cancer, eye disorders such as
          cataract, reduced immunity.
Animals: Kills some animals; eg. Plankton is destroyed that affects the food chain eventually.

Measures  to reduce Ozone Depletion:

How can individuals reduce Ozone Depletion?

    • Get a licensed technician to dispose your spoilt refrigerators so that the CFCs from the cooling system in the fridge will not escape.
    • Reduce the usage of the use of CFCs (to make them will be reduced/stopped.
    • Use Ozone friendly products that do not harm the Ozone.

How can Government help to reduce Ozone Depletion?

    • Ban usage of products containing CFCs
    • Educate people about the harmful effects of Ozone Depletion through schools/ campaigns so that everyone will be more aware and thus help to protect the Ozone layer.

What are some International strategies that can reduce Ozone Depletion?

    • Come together and sign treaties and pledge that their countirs will not use products containing CFCs.

DiD You KNOW?

Ozone Layer is recovering... It takes up to 50 years to be completely recovered.
