WHAT'S COVERED TODAY...........

MEASURES taken to reduce Global Warming

Global Warming is NOT caused by the          depletion of the Ozone Layer

Recap on the Causes... (Refer to S1E5-19 Feb Lesson)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MEASURES

INDIVIDUAL

    • Helping to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases
          • Car pull - A few people to get a lift from another person who is heading to the same place instead of using own cars.                                                                  HOW this helps? This will reduce the amount of fuels burnt and therefore reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the air/atmosphere.
          • Using public transport
          • Using more energy efficient appliances
         Question....
What measures can you as an individual take to reduce Global Warming?

  • NATIONAL (Government)

    • Using alternate source of energy;
      • Promote the usage of hybrid cars (uses electricity and fuel)
    • Enforcing laws ans regulations
      • Introduce and enforce laws to reduce the emission of Greenhouse gases (Eg. Singapore have laws to control the amount of gases emitted by vehicles.
      • Using products that are more energy-efficient (Eg. In Singapore manufacturers of refrigerators and air-conditioners may apply to SEC to have their products labelled for energy efficiency.)
    • Reducing Use of CFCs
      • To ban the use of CFCs
      • New alternatives developed to replace CFCs in cooling agents in refrigerators and air-conditioners. (Eg. In Singapore, since 1995 all new cars imported in are required by law to be equipped with CFC-free air-conditioning systems)
         Question...
What are some measures that Government can take to reduce Global Warming?

  • INTERNATIONAL

    • Kyoto Protocol (1997) signed in Kyoto, Japan
      • A treaty signed by group of countries to reduce the emission of Carbon dioxide. (some countries refused to sign as this will slow down their industries and thus affect the economy.)
      • Singapore acceded to the Kyoto Protocol in April 2006.
    • Montreal Protocol To be continued tmr.
      • A treaty signed by group of countries to limit the production and use of CFCs.
        Question...
What are some of the International Measures taken to reduce Global Warming?

SELF TEST (went through the answers)

Things to take note...
  • Sec B: Question 1
    • unit (mm) is a must
    • Must state the country that you are talking about.
    • Read the bar the right way. (bars-rainfall & line above bars - temperature)
    • Question is asking WHY and not What... So do not describe and state the reasons.
  • Sec C: Question 1
    • No one will freeze to death!!! due to a drop in temperature. State HOW it affects people... Good or bad???  Example = will use less electricity, more outdoor activities
  • Sec C: Question 2
    • this question is talking ab Rainguage... so you talk about Rainfall only.
    • (Part A) 3 marks means 3 points required!
    • (Part B) 3 points that is NOT the same as the 3 points in Part A
    • You also need to refer to the exact location before you state the reason. (Eg. Location A, is too near a building which may obstruct the rain)

Homework:

1a) Briefly describe one international measures to solve some Global Warming problem.
b) Do you think the problem of Global Warming can be completely solved by the measure described in Question 1a.
